Your Guide
Dela Fumador, your guide was born and raised in the village Adidome, located in the Volta Region of Ghana. He is very active in his community in which there are a lot of skilled and talented people: musicians, masons, carpenters, painters, sculpters, fabric designers, farmers and fishermen. Dela loves his country and is passionate about showing visitors the many amazing sights and the culture of Ghana.
Dela can speak Ewe, Ga, Akan, Fante and English. In the countryside very often people only speak their dialect so it is very useful to be with someone who can communicate in many of the dialects...
Dela finds being a tour guide encompasses a lot of his passions. He is able to show people the country he loves which will in turn help his Ghana. He also introduces his visitors to Ghanaian music. He has been interested in music since he was 10 years old, dreaming about doing music, becoming a composer and playing the songs with a band. Today he writes his own songs and performs them. He has organized and performed many successful shows, several for Cross Cultural Solutions, one for the American Jews World service and some for the public in Ho. The volunteers and public all really enjoyed the shows! He likes to incorporate music into his tours and on the trip to the waterfall he will bring a drum and perform while the volunteers are eating a picnic lunch! He enjoys introducing the Ghanaian traditional music to visitors. The Ghanaians cherish their music and perform it at social gatherings and funerals and it is a lucky visitor who can see these performances... Remembering his dreams, Dela collects traditional instruments so he can encourage the neighborhood children between 4-16 years old to learn drumming and dancing. He would like to blend the traditional rythms with electronic instruments in his future recordings and performances.
Also, Dela as your guide can help facilitate many different things for you - he knows all the hotels, the markets, where music is being played, the crafts people . He knows the traditions and the culture so he can explain many things that otherwise will pass you by.
Acknowledgements from Dela:
I am very grateful for my experience with all the institutions, organizations, groups and individuals that I have served through Dreamland Expeditions, including the waterfall trips and other trips that I put together for so many friendly volunteers of Cross Cultural Solutions, from 2000 - 2008 and the two exciting volunteer work camps I put together with Cross Cultural Solutions for American Jews World Society Volunteers working for humanity in the Volta Region.
My sincere gratitude goes to Mr. Frank Kofigah of Ghana Tourists Board Accra, Jody Putnam of United States and Anita Low of Canada for their kind encouragements given to me to explore Tourism in Ghana.
Maxwell Milligan has been a photography idol and unforgettable friend to me, after being on the road with him all over Ghana to collect images for the book Ghana A Portrait (You may like to get a copy). I have never seen such a busy and adventurous photographer who will always go the extra mile to wherever, wait and get the exact shots he wants before leaving the scene! The Bradt Guide contributed so much in planning this trip with him.
