For this day trip we leave Ho very early in the morning to visit
the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary. It is important to arrive very
early to see the monkeys as they are nocturnal animals and so
are not visible during the day (coming from Accra we would skip
the Sanctuary because the trip from the city is much further).
This Sanctuary was created in 1993 to protect the sacred mona
monkeys that live in the surrounding forests. There is a stop
at a wood carving shop at Hohoe with breakfast at Aylos Bay, a
Volta lakeside resort, at Atimpoku. We will have a picnic lunch
at the waterfall. The Wli Falls is billed as the largest waterfall
in West Africa. Thousands of fruit bats nest in the adjacent cliffs
- really an awesome sight. You can have a refreshing dip in the
small pool at the base of the falls!

2. Mount Afadjato Tour |
Mount Afadjato Tour. Mount Afadjato is Ghana's highest peak and since 1998 its forested slopes have been protected. The pretty village of Liati Wote is the base for our day hike on Afadjato. From the village, Afadjato can be climbed as a roughly two-hour round trip, with great views as far as distant Lake Volta en route, as well as good bird and butterfly watching and very occasional glimpses of monkeys or small antelope. Another attraction which takes another 45 minutes is the impressive Togbo Waterfall, which has a refreshing pool at its base! Breakfast is at Aylos Bay and a picnic lunch at the Liati Wote Tourism Development Centre.

served as a slave castle. There are local markets which are really
vibrant and colourful. We will check which days are market days
before setting off... There is also a small-scale textile weaving
